Community & Recreation

Connection, Confidence, & Fun

At Sandhill Center, we recognize the importance of connection—whether to the surrounding community, through play, or in nature. These activities foster empathy, confidence, joy, and emotional growth while promoting well-being.

Building Connections Through Community and Recreation

At Sandhill Center, we recognize the importance of connection—whether to the surrounding community, through play, or in nature. These activities foster empathy, confidence, joy, and emotional growth while promoting well-being.

Community Activities

Our students participate in meaningful activities that build responsibility and a sense of belonging:

  • Volunteering at local animal shelters

  • Visiting veterans in assisted living facilities

  • Cleaning Romero Road through the "Adopt Romero Road" program

These experiences encourage children to contribute positively to their surroundings and form healthy relationships within their community.

Recreation for Growth and Healing

Recreational activities provide children with opportunities to play, self-regulate, and grow emotionally. Carefully aligned with each child’s treatment plan, these activities include:

  • Horseback riding and caring for barn animals

  • Biking, nature walks, trampolines, and group games

  • Attending local fairs, festivals, minor league baseball games, and 5K races

Recreation brings joy while supporting therapeutic goals and emotional resilience.

Ecotherapy: The Healing Power of Nature

Sandhill’s serene location provides an ideal setting for Ecotherapy, using natural environments as a therapeutic tool. Students benefit from calming, nature-based activities like “walk and talk” therapy along peaceful trails, skipping rocks in the river, listening to bird songs, and reflecting in the soothing rhythms of the outdoors.
