Ribbons & Buckles: A Day to Remember

Despite the short preparation period, our students rose to the occasion, earning multiple ribbons and achieving five impressive first-place buckles.

Sandhill Center’s Equine Specialist, Sheila Kil, orchestrated an unforgettable experience that our students are still celebrating! Just two weeks before the New Mexico State Fair, Sheila discovered that the fair would be hosting its first-ever Exceptional Persons Horse Show. With limited time to prepare, she enthusiastically trained the students for various events, including Showmanship, Basic Riding, Trail Riding, Barrel Racing, and Pole Bending. The classes were thoughtfully tailored to accommodate different riding abilities, prioritizing safety and comfort for each participant. Sandhill even invested in additional safety equipment to support a student with limited mobility.

The event attracted over 75 riders from across the state, with Sandhill’s students—many with limited riding experience—courageously competing in front of a lively audience. Despite the short preparation period, our students rose to the occasion, earning multiple ribbons and achieving five impressive first-place buckles.

The following day, Sheila held a celebration ceremony at Del Rio House to recognize the students’ hard work and achievements. Ribbons and buckles were awarded, with each student’s accomplishments highlighted. The celebration’s joyful atmosphere and the pride of our buckle winners made it an inspiring moment for all involved. We look forward to making the Exceptional Persons Horse Show a Sandhill tradition at every State Fair!
